  2. Bait: Our favorite bait for mutton snapper is pinfish, which can be caught using pinfish traps set the day before your fishing trip. Live ballyhoo and pilchards are also excellent choices. For dead bait, butterfly ballyhoo , speedo chunks, and blue runner chunks work well.


Setting Pin Fish Traps

Catching pinfish the day before your trip ensures you have fresh bait, which significantly increases your chances of attracting mutton snapper. Here’s how to effectively set pinfish traps:

  1. Best Locations: Place your traps in grassy flats where pinfish are abundant. Look for spots with clear water and plenty of seagrass, as these are natural habitats for pinfish.

  2. Baiting the Traps: Use squid, shrimp, or cut-up fish as bait inside your traps. Secure the bait in the trap to prevent it from being washed away by currents or nibbled by smaller fish. Some traps allow for a block of chum which also works really well.
